How Joel Made Me A Better Person & Why He’s Awesome

I know that a lot of this might sound extremely long and boring, but ever since I’ve revisited Joel’s works in 2017, all the way until now, I’d say I’ve successfully caught up in most of his tracks and works, including unreleased music. Below I’ve written a lengthy bit of stuff on how Joel improved me as a person and why he’s a Godsend to this world.
The first time I heard Joel was back in the 2013-2014 era of electronic and dance music, and me being naive and somewhat lesser exposed to finer electronic music, I hadn't realized how much detail and work Joel put into all of his works. Joel’s helped me in multiple ways, and I’m going to put them down in no particular order:
This one’s a little long, but it ties me with my beliefs on existentialism and nihilism, where I had another existential crisis/questioning in the past, tied with my strong nihilism. Took a while to reach, do bear with me on this one if you can.
Being honest here, but at some point I pirated Joel’s masterclass (and Joel, if you’re reading this, I’m sorry, but once I get the money, I would invest my life savings worth into you, but at the moment, can’t afford anything as I’m a broke college student).
While watching the episodes I reached an episode where he talked about how he uses modular analog synthesizers for his productions to make sounds that have never been heard before (an idea I too stick to in my music production). As overwhelming as it looks, he explained the most important aspects of it and decomposed it into some sound engineering. As interesting as it was, I decided to go on a search for one of his iconic analog synthesizers (which by the way, is that massive eurorack sitting thing in his studio). As one thing lead to the next, I browsed through synthesizers, read about when they were first made, who made them, and then jumped head on into digital audio, how it works, and even further by how that works, finally straying into a deep pool of magnetism.
Knowing the simple fact of magnets repelling and attracting I didn’t need to get such an understanding of what magnets did, but I did once again question how did they work and found posts with analogies explaining them. Being unsatisfied with these I finally found an explanation on how this goes down to the molecular level, passing far beyond the realms of atoms and electrons, where I decided to stay a little satisfied with the fact that scientists can’t go further. Running into a video on an interview with Richard Feynnman on how magnets work, he went on about how he can’t really explain why magnets work to the interviewer. Simply stating that they just work because they do, he explained how this would all be beyond the interviewer’s understanding; thus, he would simply have to accept it. Me, knowing a little more than the interviewer, understood this greatly, that some of the most fundamental things cannot be explained and it led me to self-satisfy myself that despite us not knowing how things work, we still make great use of them. It led me to question is anything even real at all if we keep questioning about all this, and tying this to my nihilism I came to a resolve that deep down I know that life may not actually have meaning if we can’t explain everything. It’s been quite a surge of information that overwhelmed my brain in a short period of time, but man, what a journey.
It’s crazy to imagine that all this what we’re thinking is based off seemingly “lifeless” atoms and molecules. As Feynmann said, we question so many things but equally take so many questions for granted. Thus, implying that the knowledge we know isn’t as limitless as we like to think it is and we aren’t capable of understanding everything. Which, while it is a little unsatisfying for a curious me, is something that I greatly value for thought. In my eyes I feel that everything has value, as paradoxical as it is every thought has some value as is every bit of knowledge in the world. You’d think I’d assign some sort of value to life too but in reality, sometimes I bounce between thoughts of “there is meaning” vs “there isn’t”. My mind conflicts itself out of boredom/curiosity. Gosh, I’m crazy
So, what do I make of all the existentialist/nihilistic thoughts I’ve written above? Since I’m existentialist as hell, those thoughts above made me realize what keeps me sane: music and other things, and if it weren’t for Joel, I wouldn’t have gone through that huge curiosity goose chase from analog synths to magnets and to finding meaning in my life.
In relation to nihilism and Joel, after reviewing several sources of information on his thoughts on music and life/beliefs, you can tell how strongly nihilistic he is with what he does. Although he’s a successful musician that knows deep down what he is doing and how most things work, he understands the whole picture just like us (or should I say I understand it just like he does) and he best expresses his nihilistic views whenever asked about his inspirations/ideas. In reality, he messes around for prolonged periods of time trying to find something that satisfies him/sounds unique. And that is what lead him to often become successful, to find meaning in what he enjoys doing best and gradually experiment until something beautiful comes out.
He even expressed it himself he ties music to absolutely nothing at all in his life. It’s completely detached to everything in his mind. I can relate to this a lot too, but in terms of inspiration when it comes to experimentation. You’d pick a style, but eventually, it refines itself to what you are/what you like to hear that isn’t something you’ve heard already.
He’s a strong believer of experimentation and I can just feel how he does this and on a deeper level possibly does mentally too. Or as he likes to say it “Throw some spaghetti to the wall and see if it sticks”
And what depicts his nihilism even stronger is the mere fact that he doesn’t care about a lot of things. He’s very apathetic towards several things such as fame, record names, his ideas, his smoking habit (which hopefully he would have stopped) “You’re gonna die if you keep smoking. I’m gonna die anyways!”. This not only brings out such an honest, down to earth figure, but a real sense of humility, and its Joel’s honesty is that really makes his work so enjoyable.
“Why don’t you work with them?” “Oh, well, because I can actually stand on my own two fucking feet!”
“I get this sense of pride as a musician”
As a creative person myself, Joel's helped me in finding meaning to what you can do with experimentation. What you can find out about yourself as a person as to what you like. I myself, make electronic music for example, and have been since 2014, and I must say I’ve learned the most about production from Joel itself.
And this isn’t to do with the technical side, mastering, mixing, sound engineering, but rather, the whole creative process. The whole “does it sound good to me?” mentality. You can see this mentality in Joel depicted in the release of Snowcone. Joel put a lot of effort into that track, but mentioned once that it didn’t receive much hype because it wasn’t the norm of what he would make. But you know what I think? Fuck that. He put effort into it and decided to make something that he hasn’t heard of before, and if you really enjoy music, doesn’t matter what genre it is, if it sounds good, it’s good. I quote from Joel, “So long as Justin Bieber is #1 in the U.S, ratings don’t mean fuck all”.
What’s even better is that he doesn’t have a set routine to making music. He just goes into Ableton (or whatever DAW, kind of happy that he did use and helped a lot with the making of FL Studio) and makes it. And likewise, even I’ve adopted a similar habit, and it helped me uncover parts of myself I’ve never uncovered before without experimentation. When it comes to creativity, there is no right or wrong. All that matters are that it was what the original artist intended for it to come out as.
Joel’s helped me consider music as a career. I’m probably not the only one of course, as he’s a massive inspiration for many electronic artists, and he’s somebody that puts in what he earns back into his productions. This makes me so proud of him as a person because he’s actually a musician out there who’s rich out there that deserves the money and fame he gets.
Like he mentioned in a CBC Q interview with Jian Ghomeshi, “I don’t go bottle popping and flying on Jets and go to Fiji”. He’s an epitome of a hardworking person. 10 hour livestreams, and wait, how many times, how many countless videos of him streaming himself on the internet? SO many. From what I remember, he’s existed since the era of Justin.TV, which was what Twitch was before it was Twitch if I recall correctly.
Joel’s helped me have a passionate, deep appreciation for electronics and music. Watching all of his modular analog synth videos where he’s messing around in his room, either for hours on end or god knows how much, patching up cables and manipulating sounds on a granular level. It’s so inspirational to see him playing around with electronics. From the ethereal sounds he makes (See his video titled “Moular Mouse” on his YouTube channel) to absolutely stunning tracks and chord progressions/melodies/polyrhythms (I’ve previously made a post on this subreddit that I think contains 78 of my favorite songs from Joel, which has recently expanded to 84 lol), he’s made a true mark in the world of electronic music. Thanks to Joel, I have a burning passion for synthesizers, and can’t wait to get my hands on a modular analog one at some point in my life. That would be a dream.
In addition to extending my passion for electronic music, what really caught my attention was the fact that he hates associating his music, or music in general to drugs or being intoxicated. He talks about how he tried weed once on a Joe Rogan podcast, and mentioned he hated the experience. Similarly, on his interview with Ghomeshi, about drugs, he stated “…and I’m watching kids, you know, getting carried out by paramedics over the front railing and I’m playing, right, and I, I, you know what, sometimes I just wanna stop the show, and, you know, it’s not cool.” “I really don’t like it. It upsets me.” This just goes to show how much he truly has a passion for what he listens to and makes and doesn’t associate it with drug culture (although its partially ironic, because he does drink during his shows, and that too could be seen as intoxication).
Joel’s helped me become more honest in life. Ever since I’ve watched his interviews, to livestreams and tweets, I’ve stopped giving a fuck what other people think. I’ve decided to really look at the reality of things how it is, and I’m going to be honest here, in my opinion, I see no value or meaning towards whatever “music” that is mass produced onto the pop charts or top EDM charts. Its rubbish, its garbage, it sounds cheaply made, created really quickly using a few pre-made presets, and Joel hints at things like this already in wherever I’ve mentioned previously before. For example, his Masterclass (where he refers to Nexus as a cardinal sin of EDM, as it has presets that could be used as entire songs).
Joel gave me a new meaning to what fitting into society meant – that its worthless and better to invest your time in improving yourself. As a quote he mentioned somewhere on his Tumblr I believe, it was “i was the least popular in my school. The less popular you are, the more time you have to work on your own thing as opposed to trying to fit into everyone else's thing". Reading this, I saw myself in Joel. I saw myself and how much I resonated with this statement, and it reminded me of how I used to be someone that desperately tried to fit into the grade at one point in school. I’m sure a lot of us have. But it’s the fact that I never fit into school that helped me. It’s the fact that I stopped following the masses, and society in general. I found a home, within myself, a place where I was the most comfortable at. Where I could explore whatever I wanted. And I’m sure this is what Joel did too. I’m sure this is why he’s come to be someone as humble as he is today – through all that time spent alone and mastering himself as a person, expanding his creativity in the early days of web design, programming, artworks, flash, and from there onward to music development. Oh, how I bet it’s a beautiful journey he’s been through.
Joel, you’ve managed to somehow put me into this other dimension filled with beautiful arps and melodies you’ve made throughout your musical career using your modular analog synths or whatever experimentation you did, and it really pushed me forward. How your music transcended with time, and how much I’ve learned from you on the internet and improved as a person. I really hope I could just sit down, and have a long, meaningful conversation about music or life or whatever with you dude, maybe even play around with patch cables or something. Despite the fact that we’ve never met, it’s almost as if I’ve made a new friend. Real, or imaginary? Imaginary. Probably the best imaginary friend I’ve ever had. I know that ending was probably corny as hell, but I really don’t care. I’m just obsessed with Joel’s work and it never ceases to fail me. Joel, you absolute legend, you’re probably not gonna read this whole thing, but it was worth getting this off my chest.
TLDR: Joel has made me a better person. Joel is a godsend.
Thank you guys for whoever who actually read this whole bunch of junk. It means a lot.
Happy Birthday Joel!
Also, this somehow landed at 2448 words.

7) Build Your Own Commons Bundles (designed for completionist collectors)
*I have a lot of respect for people who go for complete and near-complete sets of games, and I want to help other collectors check off common games in bulk. Of all the games above priced at $5.25 or $6, you can build any custom bundle from these options: *
  • Bundle 1 - Choose any 10 games for $30
  • Bundle 2 - Choose any 15 games for $40
  • Bundle 3 - Choose any 25 games for $55
