First of all, I think Foxhole is an amazing game, it’s the best top-down shooter game and it has lot more content than most AAA games these days(also has far fewer bugs). Having said that Foxhole has some problems, devs focused too much on content and balance(which are necessary to keep old players interested) but focused too little to gameplay (which attracts new players).

One of the biggest issue with Foxhole it fails to keep new players playing the game, after playing the game little bit new players leave as new player experience is inconsistent. Some other major issues with the games are- flanking is difficult with AI defence; you cannot win by fighting, you have to build AI foxholes in the land to secure anything; early fightings are worthless game only care about numbers, only when the players of a team quit the other team wins; devs claiming the game is barely profitable and when new players stop coming they will run out of money (which will be a nightmare scenario if Foxhole fails to keep new players engaged when it gets released in 2020/21).

These suggestions will help mitigate most of the issues with gameplay and I hope some of these will be implemented while Foxhole still in early access. These suggetions will improve new player experience greatly and make sure they don’t stop playing after an hour. However most of these suggestions will require rebalance and devs have to watch whether player count is dropping or increasing after each update.

This is the biggest thread you will ever read.

1- Meaningful battles The worst part of the game is that capturing new land doesn’t matter, neither does logis. To fix this, we need insentive for city occupation and scrapping. In order to create this insentive, developers have to disable most of the reource mining fields from backline bases. The backline refineries also have to be nerfed heavily, this way armies have to maintain the frontline refineries 24/7 to create enough artillary shells/armor.

This way the whole army has to work together with the logis to keep them safe. They have to ‘secure and occupy’ new territory as fast as they can, create safe roadways and communicate with logis to safely bring resources to frontline outposts. This will create continuous infantry battles inside scrapyards/refineries near the frontline, if they get destroyed by howitzers/enemy rushers with HE, army will fall far behind enemy on supplies. Rushing and flanking will be somewhat useful now, sort of like Company of Heroes.

There will be some balance issues from this- this will decrease the gather rate for each resources, to mitigate that negative effect devs can increase the mining rate. Logitrucks have to be stronger so it can take more bullets from enemies etc. This also means most of the people will be at frontline servers so maybe in future we will need more frontline maps?

I admit this can be a major direction change for the game, devs wanted the logistics to be delivered cross-map, from homebase to the frontline, but this mechanic will change some of that, instead this is like continuous-infantry-close quarters like Stalingrad city. However this is realistic, history shows whenever a nation had resource shortage they started colony conquest, like ‘colonials’. This is the reason for all the wars in history( or any RTS campaign ever) and if players care about ‘fighting for resources’ they can create their own stories in a game without any story mode. This also fulfills devs vision about making logi more ‘interesting’.

2) AI defence To most people, AI defence spam is the worst part of this game. At a specific waevent, disable foxhole AI and (if necessary) increase the range of watch towers and observation towers. This way the event is not going to be annoying and at the same time outposts are going to able to locate flankers.
​

Or if disabling AI completely is not possible, only enabling AI for specific area (town halls/forts/outposts but not encampments) is another option. This way people can lose supply/vehicles behind the front and it makes flanking worth it. This makes encircling a city worth something, realisticly most cities fell after they were surrounded and ran out of supplies, including Stalingrad. Right now the current meta is just to shell the city town hall and rush them with grenades but this changes that.

I understand decay has nerfed AI defense heavily and destroying outposts with howitzer will disable AI, but still, AI defence have to be developed in a way it doesn’t get in a way when soldiers are fighting. AI defence is acceptible when the map is a backline map and no defenders playing it, but when the map is the front AI defence is terrible. AI is a necessary evil so it must be properly monitored lest it should hurt player experience.

3) Non buildable frontline Statistically, the biggest reason new players leave is that combat is totally pointless, the team who plays slowly and put walls/foxholes/howitzers is going to win. Ironically foxholes are one of the most annoying factors in a game called Foxhole :P Anyways, the problem with new players in Foxhole is that their experience is inconsistent.
​
To overcome this problem we need a desert/frozen lake map where most part of the map you cannot build anything(like coastal beach). This makes sure you cannot spam AI defence and will improve new players experience greatly. To balance, there could be small patches of land here and there to place howitzer to attack cities or boxes to put stuff in.
​
Additionally making a jungle map like vietnam but without foxholes is also a good idea, this way there will be enough cover and stealth for players but at the same time they can have fun with infantry/ light armor. This will also create a scope for vehicle superiority like operation desert storm. Imagine tanks and refulers roaming around massive desert and infantry try to flank them with RPG, one encampment is very far from another and there is no room for building defenses.

I believe the devs focus too much one world war 1 style gameplay but forget that world war 1 is not fun for a video game, it was basically trench warfare, Verdun game has less player than Holdfast Nations at War (based on 200 years old wars). Battlefield 1 has so many players because it did not have any WW1 gameplay, there are no trenches everything is an automatic gun.

4) Numbers game In this game numbers always win, without one team quitting other team can’t win. I don’t think this can be mitigated completely, this is a shooter after all and not a role playing game. But my first 3 suggestions can mitigate this issue to certain extent, if people are allowed to flank heavily, have insentive to continuously attack enemy refineries and scrapyards or encouraged to use weapons and guns instead of building walls/foxholes the numbers will matter less and skill will matter more.

I also suggest devs should look into spawn mechanics, is it possible for devs to increase respawning time? In many cases enemies respawn too fast and keep coming, and they can pick up guns from ground to make it worse. But I don’t think it’s a major factor right now.

5) Nerf V2 I don’t want to talk about Jade Cove Incident here, but stuff like that will happen again and again in this game. A medium size clan can nuke friendly town (and kill lots of friendlies) while every teammate protests against them, haha. Then the game devs defended them, trying to claim it is amazing that a smaller clan can change the course of the game, but ironically that clan is loved by the enemy and hated by its teammates :P To be honest a smaller clan performing actions with consequences is not a bad idea but there is a big balance issue in this regard.

Game should nerf nuke to typical V2 rockets, which is more historical for world war 2. This will be less damaging to the enemies and will disable all structures in that area for 30 minutes to 1 hour, giving attackers a chance to rush the town hall. This won’t make the area disabled for the rest of the war, so people won’t get upset and quit war. This improves teamplay greatly, instead of attacking and retreating people will come together and surround Jade Cove from all 2 directions and will blockade the sea for couple of days, waiting for couple of V2 rockets to launch to Jade Cove, when they hit they rebuild bridges then rush together! This buffs gunplay heavily while not nerfing defensive players much. If enemy attacks you after a rocket strike, you can use your own rocket on enemy bridge to defend yourself.

V1 rocket was used by Nazis a lot during WW2 and it needed a plane to be delivered(google Battle of Britain V1 rockets London). This adds another dynamic, if a base uses bmat and rmat to deploy Anti Aircraft gun(instead of AT guns/Foxholes) it will be easier for them to stop rockets from attacking. One type of rocket should have limited range, say 2 or 3 kilometers while ICBM style rocket should have cross map capability.

6) Jade Cove inconsistency Another thing about Jade Cove incident, the game is built in a way that a small clan cannot impact the game in anyway, they can barely flank and kill some logi drivers and cause havoc for about… 5 minutes. For a big size clan push you still need to maintain arty/armor and builders to achieve any decisive victory. Jade Cove incident goes opposite of the core gameplay of the gameplay where a medium sized clan can alter game balance completely. Developers have to realize the game needs more consistency not less of it.

7) Gunplay Another issue with player satisfaction is the gunplay, while weapon accuracy and damage is amazingly balanced, the gunplay is itself is painful. ‘Strafe your mouse to edge of the screen after rotating constantly and killing your fingers early in life’ is never gonna sell enough copies, devs have to realise that. These images show you can have a mouse movement limitation with the screen so you cannot shoot the enemies(and maybe even have a fog limitation?) out of the circle. If you shoot at their direction there should be a massive accuracy penalty ( -90% ).

7b) Current gunplay also have problems with mountains, people in mountains are difficult to be aimed, my suggestion will also create a chance to implement a zoom option in the game so you can shoot people in mountain more conveniently.

7c) Vehicles should have multiple firing mode like firing smoke shell to hide itself etc. How about mortar smoke? Every game that has mortar has mortar smoke option, Battlefield even has a grenade launcher with smoke. Infantries should also have multiple firing modes.

8) Salvage tanks and buildable roads Devs said they will make logi more interesting in future, I don’t know the details but I don’t think making a factorio like game within foxhole will work as this game doesn’t have the playerbase right now. However I can suggest adding salvage tanks, this way you don’t use hammers to repair tanks, you need salvage vehicles to drag tanks out of battlezones or to repair tracks. In Company of heroes you can use salvage vehicles to revive destroyed tanks in the battlefield.

8b) People already suggested creating buildable roads and trains. Dynamic roads sound great however I don’t think just by road construction game will improve, it will only be fun if you can also destroy trees or mountains to create pathways. Otherwise dynamic roads are not gonna be good enough for teams to fight for. Trains however can make the game like Factorio and make game more interesting.

How about m104 wolverine bridge builder? This will make bridge fighting more intense, players cant just shoot artillary to stop bridges anymore they have to have RPG to destroy bridge builder at the other side.

9) Buggy howitzer Howitzer projectiles are buggy. If an arty is behind a building or hill it can not be hit by enemy arty while still attacking properly. To fix this game needs to rework projectiles, to make sure howitzer hits the wall 2 meters out of their barrel.

9b) Trenches and artillary In real life mortars are more effective against trenches and foxholes than artillaries because of mortar’s vertical projectile curve. Mortars get inside narrow trenches while artillary hits the back wall and don’t kill inside. I know making trenches as a deployable building is difficult, but can you introduce more static trenches in different maps of this game? Make those static trenches strong against enemy artillary but weak against mortars.

10) Tank armor Storm tanks and other armored vehicles will have to be almost invulnerable from front, however they should be easier to flank if some of the other suggestions I have given are implemented. If soldiers are not able to build walls on the flank easily tanks will be flanked from side or rear.

Armored cars and other light armors should have lot more armors in the front against HMG, they should be only weak against AT rifles or RPG. Making them weak against all small arms fire even in the front armor is just annoying, this also makes the new playerbase (who probably rushes with halftracks/armored car) upset about vehicles and quit game.

11) Unpopular opinion, I think right now game doesn’t have enough playerbase for all these maps, I would like to see 9 maps instead of 12 for now, this way player experience are more intense.

11b) I know many people gonna hate this, but devs should consider a timed war feature. Declare every war has to end within 2 or 3 weeks, end of the duration the team with most portbases wins. This way Foxhole servers will always be packed like Rust servers do after weekly wipes.

12) Shield gadgets we need a shield gadget or juggernaut uniform (google juggernaut soldier) to push enemy line, which has strong armor against foxholes and weapon damage(like an armored car) but bad against artillary/enemy shotguns as it moves or rotates very slowly. I am not sure whether making it invulnerable against frags will be a good idea.

13) Cosmetic microtransaction creating cosmetic DLCs can make the game profitable for long term support or will increase the budget for marketing. To make sure microTX doesn’t destroy balance they should mainly focus on animation/dance move microTX like Fortnite/Dota 2. To make player skin they can sell custom camo. R6S did a good job with custom camo, they created stealthy skins for default operators but will sell you more conspicious skins in exchange for money/XP points. So the proper camo should be the default gamers can buy weird skins like this for money→ (google Tachanka elite bundle). This also paved the way for future free to play (if necessary).

Devs always stated the plan for class-specific unifroms so you don’t have to scream who is a artillary gunner who is a medic all time. Even with free uniforms, there is a room for microTX, sell various designs for medpac/shovels/machine guns?

14) Community servers Seems like devs are not interested in micro transactions at all. If that is the case I don’t understand why devs don’t introduce the option for community servers, if a group of players decide they will have their own MMO servers with their own mods and regulations devs should find a way to enable that. I really want to see a custom storm tank superiority or gunboat superiority game in this game.

I like this idea because whenever a team is losing they can just hope in a custom server for a quick fun game, making sure they don’t have to waste time in main war while their team slowly loses all towns. This will improve new player experience greatly.

15) Voice chat There should be a voice chat limit on local, so if you are talking for over a 30 second your voice chat charge will deplete and you need to recharge. This way there will not be music spam. However operation/squad voice chat should work properly?

15c) Radio towers will be like watch towers but if you are a senior player like a general or such you can talk to a radio tower, it will work like a propaganda tower spreading your message to the team at specific areas, maybe even instruction, like ‘Easy Company! Right flank is empty attack right flank right now with 2 storm rifles’ , ‘dog company hold the line’ and such.

17) Paratrooper and aeroplane This can be major gameplay/balance nightmare but can we have paratroopers in the game, who will be able to only carry very limited weight? Paratroopers will spawn at mainbase airstrip then when they jump into a plane the plane will always go in a specific direction (like company of heroes paratroopers). Paratroopers can jump out at any moment to harass enemies behind the lines.

17b) I already talked about V1 rockets carried by a plane. These type of airstrikes are easier to implement as they don’t require zoom feature like paratroopers will require. You don’t even need to see airplanes going over your defence, your AA guns will automatically start shooting when they see enemy planes coming with v1 rockets.

This guy wants something like Tacnet or StratSketch, but more detailed. Trello+map editor? This is not easy to make but it’s necessary. You want to let teammates know your deadbody had mortar or tank shells, you want to let some of your high ranking teammate know exactly where are you, while hiding from potential afk spies in your team. If this tactics tool has a permission management, it can easily replace ingame mapping and mitigate spying problem 100%.
