[META] This sub is full of armchair game critics...
Regarding the post title, what I mean is that the threads here read as if they're written and commented on by individuals with a certain attitude that I find appealing. An attitude that stems from a core love of gaming based on what is valuable in a game (the experience one gets!), not fueled by the newest release pining for our attention.
I wanted to express my appreciation for this sub and how it provides a calmer ludocentrism than its relatives. A big reason why I lurk in this sub over other video game forums is the casual attitude that users seem to share. There are no console flame wars, no hype trains, no corporate marketing forcing us to look at the thousandth ad of "Call of Duty: Another One." (nothing against COD! Just making a point) This sub, by design, is largely free of the noisy hype trains and bandwagons that pollute other threads. I like being able to read posts and engage with other gamers that are not all about having newer, shinier (and often shallower) games.
I used to be a hardcore console gamer. I flipped between Xbox and PS for a long time, but always owned one of the latest consoles from either Microsoft or Sony (sometimes both). Owning the latest consoles provided me with access to the most cutting-edge releases. I got to the point where such easy access conditioned me to purchase new releases impulsively. The merits of waiting for patches, DLC, etc. aside, the biggest flaw in my mindset was not examining the "game-i-ness" of my purchases. That is, would the game be something that would provide me with a legit good experience, or was I merely following the trends?
In fact, the reason I ditched my Xbox and PS4 and get a Switch was specifically for Nintendo's smaller library of titles. I figured forcing myself into a smaller menu would help me be less impulsive when presented with the plethora of games on other platforms. Luckily, my favorite games on my rotation at the time were offered on the Switch (Diablo 3, Skyrim, Fortnite, etc.). This choice was an investment at first but ended up paying off (literally) as the years went by until...
Enter patientgamers. Discovering this sub opened my eyes to what really matters most in this hobby: the end experience. It's more than a "I'll wait til 'game x' is cheaper so I can save money," thing and more of a "will this game provide me a genuinely positive video game experience." Don't get me wrong! I'm all for saving money. This hobby can get very pricy, very fast. But my point is that gamers should base their decisions off of what they perceive as value, and not just mindlessly swallow the industry meta-narrative of "this is new, buy it now." (I like used to).
Nowadays, I only game on my Switch and enjoy playing games that bring me authentic enjoyment. This sub shook me awake by shifting my perspective that new games are intrinsically worthwhile. Granted, many of them are, and I'm sure there will always be new releases that tempt the 'patientgamer' in me (Cyberpunk 2077, anyone?). But thanks to y'all, I've seen the light and have become a more judicious gamer for good reasons.
In conclusion, because of this sub, I now approach this hobby from what I consider a more mature, authentic perspective. Merits of considerate budgeting aside, I've found out that true enjoyment from video gaming comes from playing games that really "click" with me, and not falling for the siren song of the newest thing. We each have our own preferences when it comes to gaming, but we share a common love of the hobby, and I'm glad this sub exists and made me recognize a fatal flaw in my former gaming life.
I hope I've made y'all proud! Can't wait to hear other stories of other 'woke' gamers. Thank you for indulging me. Cheers!
