30 NBA All-Time Teams in 30 Days: All-Time Dallas Mavericks (4/30)
Head Coach: Rick Carlisle (2008-)
Accolades w/Team: 470-416 Regular Season Record, 28-30 Playoff Record, 1 Finals Appearance, 1x NBA Champion
Assistant Coach: Don Nelson (1997-05)
Accolades w/Team: 339-251 Regular Season Record, 19-24 Playoff Record
Assistant Coach: Dick Motta (1980-87, 1994-96)
Accolades w/Team: 329-409 Regular Season Record, 11-17 Playoff Record
PG1: Jason Kidd (1994-96, 2008-12)
Accolades w/Team: 1 Finals Appearance, 1x NBA Champion, 3x All-Star, 1994-95 Rookie of the Year
Stats: 10.5 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 8.4 APG, 1.9 SPG, 0.4 BPG
Jason Kidd had a rather interesting career with the Dallas Mavericks that included two separate stints and a little beef. After being drafted second by the team in 1994, Kidd made an impact immediately as he won Rookie of the Year in 1995 and was selected to the All-Star team in 1996. However, during the middle of his third season, Kidd was traded to the Phoenix Suns in a package that included Michael Finley because of beef with teammates, specifically Jim Jackson. He would later return to Dallas in February of 2008 when he was traded from New Jersey for a package involving Devin Harris. During his second stint in Big D, Kidd was named an All-Star in 2010 and was among the league leaders in assists and steals. He was also the starting point guard of the 2011 Mavericks that won the NBA Championship over LeBron and the Miami Heat.
PG2: Derek Harper (1983-94, 1996-97)
Accolades w/Team: 2x All-Defensive 2nd Team
Stats: 14.4 PPG, 2.6 RPG, 5.9 APG, 1.8 SPG, 0.3 BPG
Derek Harper was the point guard on several contending Mavericks teams during the 1980s including the 1988 team that took the Lakers to seven games in the Western Conference Finals. He also was a really good defender who was overshadowed by other great defenders of his era like Cooper, Dennis Johnson, and even Michael Jordan as well as a great point guard overshadowed by Magic Johnson, Isiah Thomas, and some other guys. No player in Dallas Mavericks history has more assists or steals than Derek Harper does.
PG3: Steve Nash (1998-04)
Accolades w/Team: 2x All-Star, 2x All-NBA 3rd Team
Stats: 14.6 PPG, 2.9 RPG, 7.2 APG, 0.9 SPG, 0.1 BPG
Nash may have not become a superstar until he signed with the Phoenix Suns, but he was an excellent point guard for the Dallas Mavericks in his six seasons there. Nash was a two-time All-Star in Big D and usually finished near the top among players in three-point percentage, free-throw percentage, and assists. Nobody shot better from the free-throw line during their career in Dallas than Steve Nash, who shot 89.8% from the charity stripe as a Maverick. Nash was also important during their 2003 run to the Western Conference Finals where they ultimately lost to the Spurs in six games.
PG4: Brad Davis (1980-92)
Stats: 8.6 PPG, 1.9 RPG, 5.1 APG, 0.8 SPG, 0.2 BPG
Brad Davis struggled early in his career before he signed with the Dallas Mavericks in December of 1980, where he’d spend the final twelve years of his career. Only Dirk Nowitzki has played more games for the franchise than Brad Davis did. He was so loyal to the city of Dallas that the team retired his jersey a few months before he played his final NBA game. Not only was Davis loyal to the team that gave him his first full opportunity, but he also was an excellent player. He excelled from the three-point line and the charity stripe, and also led the league in offensive rating three times as a point guard.
SG1: Rolando Blackman (1981-92)
Accolades w/Team: 4x All-Star
Stats: 19.2 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 3.2 APG, 0.8 SPG, 0.3 BPG
Rolando Blackman, drafted 9th by the Dallas Mavericks in the 1981 NBA Draft, became a full-time starter during his sophomore season and played an important role during those 1980s Mavericks teams that contended during the decade. He scored at least 20 PPG thrice as his exceptional scoring ability helped him get selected to the All-Star game four times. Only “German Jesus” or Dirk Nowitzki has scored more points and played more minutes as a Dallas Maverick than Rolando Blackman did during his 11-year tenure there.
SG2: Jason Terry (2004-12)
Accolades w/Team: 2 Finals Appearances, 1x NBA Champion, 2008-09 Sixth Man of the Year
Stats: 16.1 PPG, 2.3 RPG, 4.1 APG, 1.2 SPG, 0.3 BPG
Jason Terry was a very important piece for the Dallas Mavericks during the late 2000s and early 2010s. Terry, in the 2006 NBA Finals, averaged 22 PPG as a starter where they lost to the Miami Heat in six games. Terry would later start coming off the bench during the 2007-08 season and would win the Sixth Man of the Year award the following season. As a reserve, Terry would also outperform LeBron James in the 2011 NBA Finals, helping the Mavericks defeat the Miami Heat in six games. In his final season in Dallas, Terry finished with the second-most three-pointers in the NBA.
SG3: Luka Doncic (2018-)
Accolades w/Team: 2018-19 Rookie of the Year
Stats: 21.2 PPG, 7.8 RPG, 6 APG, 1.1 SPG, 0.3 BPG
Drafted third overall in the 2018 NBA Draft, Luka Doncic is the youngest player as well as the only rookie from last season that made an All-Time team at just 20 years old, but it was close. Doncic was a fun rookie to watch last season as he was an exceptional all-around point forward who could not only find teammates but also shoot the ball very well. Not only was he fun to watch but he also had a historic rookie season as he is only one of two rookies in NBA history to average at least 21 PPG, 7.5 RPG, and 6 APG (the other player was HOFer Oscar Robertson). After winning Rookie of the Year in his first season and leading the Mavericks in PPG and APG, Luka Doncic has nowhere to go but up heading into his second season in the NBA.
SF1: Mark Aguirre (1981-89)
Accolades w/Team: 3x All-Star
Stats: 24.6 PPG, 5.7 RPG, 3.8 APG, 0.9 SPG, 0.4 BPG
Mark Aguirre was taken with the first overall pick in the 1981 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks after the team won a coin flip for that first pick. He was injured, but solid during his rookie year and continued to improve as the Mavericks became contenders in the 1980s. In the 1983-84 NBA season, Aguirre averaged 29.5 PPG, good enough for second in the league, and took the Mavericks into the NBA Playoffs for the first time as a franchise. Unfortunately, Aguirre had conflict with coaches and teammates and was traded to Detroit, where he would win two NBA Championships. It’s truly disappointing that Aguirre’s tensions with the franchise towards the end of his tenure with the team delayed his jersey retirement by a lot. He was a phenomenal scorer as he averaged more PPG as a Maverick that any other player and he helped popularize basketball in a town where football reigned supreme.
SF2: Michael Finley (1996-05)
Accolades w/Team: 2x All-Star
Stats: 19.8 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 3.8 APG. 1.2 SPG, 0.4 BPG
Acquired from the Jason Kidd trade, Michael Finley became Dallas’s first scoring option immediately and thrived under that role. Finley averaged at least 20 PPG in each of his first five full seasons with the Mavericks and was one of the members of Dallas’s big three in the early 2000s with him, Dirk, and Nash. In that five-year span, Finley also led the league in minutes per game thrice. Finley could shoot the rock really well during his era as he shot around 38% from the three-point line with the Mavericks.
SF3: Josh Howard (2003-10)
Accolades w/Team: 1 Finals Appearance, 1x All-Star
Stats: 15.3 PPG, 6 RPG, 1.7 APG, 1.1 SPG, 0.6 BPG
Josh Howard was an underdog story that ended horribly. He was born with deformed legs that had to be broken, so they could grow straight. However, Howard didn’t let this affect him as he was a great player at Wake Forest that would help him get drafted in the first round of the 2003 NBA Draft. Josh Howard was a solid player from his rookie year and continued to show improvement on several Mavericks playoffs teams. Howard helped Dallas make the NBA Finals in 2006 and was named an All-Star in 2007. However, weed and injuries ruined his NBA career as he was never the same player after the 2007-08 season. He was a hard-working player who was a great second option to Dirk Nowitzki in the mid-2000s before off-the-court issues caught up with him.
PF1: Dirk Nowitzki (1998-2019)
Accolades w/Team: 2 Finals Appearances, 1x NBA Champion, 2011 Finals MVP, 1x NBA MVP, 14x All-Star, 4x All-NBA 1st Team, 5x All-NBA 2nd Team, 3x All-NBA 3rd Team
Stats: 20.7 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 2.4 APG, 0.8 SPG, 0.8 BPG
Dirk Nowitzki or “German Jesus” is the greatest Dallas Mavericks player of all-time by about a mile, if not more than that. The recently retired future hall of famer has the most seasons for any player with any team with 21 seasons as a Dallas Maverick. Drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1998 NBA Draft, he was immediately traded to Dallas where he’d spend his entire career. Dirk is the greatest three-point shooter who is at least seven feet tall and was exceptional from the free-throw line. He turned the Mavericks from a laughing stock in the 1990s to a legit contender during the 2000s as he had 12 All-NBA selections and won an MVP in the 2006-07 season. He took Dallas to the NBA Finals twice in 2006 and 2011 and was named the Finals MVP in 2011, averaging 26 PPG, 9.7 RPG, and 2 APG. He was so loyal to Dallas that he passed up offers that would pay him more to stay with the team that traded for him on draft day. Nobody in Dallas Mavericks history has more points, games, minutes, three-pointers, rebounds, and blocks than Dirk, and most of those records are by a comfortable margin. Dirk will not only be remembered as the greatest Mavericks player of all-time, but also one of the greatest international NBA players of all-time.
PF2: Sam Perkins (1984-90)
Stats: 14.4 PPG, 8 RPG, 1.8 APG, 1 SPG, 0.9 BPG
Sam Perkins may have been taken one pick before Charles Barkley in the 1984 NBA Draft by the Mavericks, but Michael Jordan’s college teammate did have a solid six-year career in Big D. He was a key part of several really good Mavericks teams in the later part of the 1980s including the team that took the eventual 1988 NBA Champion Lakers to seven games in the Western Conference Finals. He was Dallas’s best scorer in the frontcourt, and after he left Dallas, he helped several teams make the NBA Finals like the Lakers in 1991 and the Supersonics in 1996.
C1: Roy Tarpley (1986-91, 1994-95)
Accolades w/Team: 1987-88 Sixth Man of the Year
Stats: 12.6 PPG, 10 RPG, 1 APG, 1.1 SPG, 1.2 BPG
Roy Tarpley had a complicated career with the Dallas Mavericks, but he could have been a star had it not been for drugs. Coming off the bench, Tarpley instantly thrived with Mavericks in his first two years as he averaged 10.6 PPG and 9.6 RPG. In those first two seasons, he would be named to the All-Rookie 1st Team and won Sixth Man of the Year during his sophomore campaign. However, as Roy Tarpley improved on the court, off-court issues caught to him as well. He was suspended for drugs in January of 1989 and also had to deal with injuries like a torn ACL that prevented Tarpley from playing all but five games in the 1990-91 season. After that season, he was suspended indefinitely by the NBA for drugs but would be reinstated before the 1994-95 season. However, he was suspended again in November of 1995 for drugs. It’s really sad that we never got to see Tarpley’s full potential. He could have been the franchise player for the Mavericks if drugs and injuries didn’t get in his way.
C2: James Donaldson (1985-92)
Accolades w/Team: 1x All-Star
Stats: 8.8 PPG, 9.5 RPG, 0.8 APG, 0.4 SPG, 1.3 BPG
James Donaldson was the starting center for several great Mavericks teams back in the late 1980s. He was a really good rebounder as only Dirk Nowitzki has more rebounds than him in Mavericks history. He was also an efficient scorer, shooting 55% from the field during his seven-year stint with the Dallas Mavericks. He was selected to the All-Star game in 1988, the year the team went to the Western Conference Finals and lost to the mighty Lakers in seven games.
C3: Tyson Chandler (2010-11, 2014-15)
Accolades w/Team: 1 Finals Appearance, 1x NBA Champion, 1x All-Defensive 2nd Team
Stats: 10.2 PPG, 10.4 RPG, 0.8 APG, 0.5 SPG, 1.1 BPG
Acquired from the Charlotte Bobcats before the 2010-11 season, Tyson Chandler immediately made the Mavericks better as he anchored their defense and rebounding, which helped them win the 2011 NBA Finals over the Miami Heat. Not only did Chandler impact their defense, but he was a solid pick-and-roll option on offense. Chandler signed with the Knicks during the off-season, hurting Dallas’s chance at a repeat during the 2011-12 season. However, Chandler returned to Dallas before the 2014-15 season and had a solid campaign as he averaged a double-double. Chandler didn’t have the longevity in Dallas, but his impact on the team was felt.
TL;DR All-Time Mavericks Roster
|PG||Jason Kidd||Derek Harper, Steve Nash, Brad Davis|
|SG||Rolando Blackman||Jason Terry, Luka Doncic|
|SF||Mark Aguirre||Michael Finley, Josh Howard|
|PF||Dirk Nowitzki||Sam Perkins|
|C||Roy Tarpley||James Donaldson, Tyson Chandler|
|Head Coach||Assistant Coaches|
|Coaching Staff||Rick Carlisle||Don Nelson, Dick Motta|
- This team is built around Dirk Nowitzki and he is surrounded by a talented group of players. The backcourt is a very solid one as Jason Kidd is a very good playmaking point guard and Rolando Blackman was an excellent scorer, especially with his mid-range shot as he had seasons where he averaged 20+ PPG.
- Although Mark Aguirre clashed with his coaches and teammates which led to him being traded, he is the best player on this All-Time Mavericks team other than Dirk and the two are both excellent but efficient scorers who I feel could co-exist together considering how he did with the Bad Boys Pistons after being traded from Dallas. Roy Tarpley is an interesting selection by me as I feel he could have had a really good career if it weren't for drug issues. He was a solid inside scorer, rebounder, and role players for the Mavericks in the late 1980s.
- This second unit is pretty to that of the All-Time Cavaliers. There is lots of spacing as Harper, Terry, Finley, and Perkins would all be really good three-point shooters in the modern NBA. Although Donaldson, the backup center, wasn't as much of a scorer as the other four guys, he was efficient when he scored inside the paint.
- Like the All-Time Suns, the Mavericks don't really have any big men outside of Dirk. Tarpley, Perkins, Donaldson, and Chandler were all solid with the Mavericks but none of them were spectacular players in the NBA.
